The Best Way to Deep Clean your Humidifier

We all love humidifiers! Mostly because they produce water vapor to increase the overall humidity levels in the air of your home. Thus, using one is especially helpful during the winter to offset the dry heated air coming from your furnace. Also, a humidifier is amazing to keep your skin and lips from drying out. Hence, it helps to reduce symptoms of cold, cough, allergies, and other common wintertime conditions. However, it can also harm your health if you’re not cleaning it regularly. The moist and warm conditions from your humidifier can cause bacteria and mold to form. Thus, it’s important to keep it clean and sanitized. Keep reading and see which is the best way to deep clean your humidifier.

General tips to care for your humidifiers

– First off, empty and refill the tank every day. Always fill it with clean, filtered water to keep mineral deposits from forming in the machine.

– The second tip is to clean and disinfect it at least once a week. Check out how to do it.

How to deep clean your humidifier the right way

1. Unplug your humidifier

Remove the filter and rinse with cool water. Some chemicals can cause permanent damage to filters. Thus, it’s best to just refrain from using any cleaning products on it. Set the clean filter on a towel and let any excess water drip off.

2. Remove the water tank

Inspect the base of your humidifier for any mineral deposits or areas with mold or mildew. To clean these areas, use scrub brush or an old toothbrush dipped in white vinegar. Repeat the scrubbing process a second time if necessary. Then, simply rinse the areas thoroughly.

3. Disinfect your humidifier

Once you have cleaned the humidifier, you can disinfect it with the help of hydrogen peroxide. Fill the water tank with water, and add one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide per each gallon of water. Gently swish the solution to coat the tank evenly, and allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Put the humidifier back together, fill the tank with cool water and resume regular use.
