It might seem strange to have ticks indoors since they love living outdoors and lay their eggs on the soil surface, but, oftentimes, ticks do enter your house.
As a matter of fact, some tick species develop very well indoors and can complete an entire lifecycle. These types of ticks, the brown dog ticks, get into the house carried by your dog, as dogs are their favorite host. So, ticks will drop off your dog and set up freely in your home. Well that’s the moment when you should panic, because ticks will multiply quickly and you will deal with an infestation.
It’s important to act immediately when you see a tick crawling on your floor, curtains and carpets to crack its head.
However, if you are already dealing with a tick infestation, you must do something right away. The best thing is to call the local exterminator and let them deal with these disease-spreading insects or you can follow the next safety methods:
The first and most important step you can take is:
Check yourself and your family
Look very closely to every inch of your body and then check each family member for ticks. The next move is to check your dog and comb its fur to see if there any bumps.
Repair any crevice or gasp
The only tick specie that is curios in getting inside is brown dog ticks. That’s why you should seal any crack and crevices in your home. This way you’ll keep many insects at a distance including spiders.
Apply tick treatments to your pet for an extra dose of safety. You can use tick collars and spot-on treatments.
Vacuum the house completely – as you mean it!
Vacuum all those ticks down. This incredible device will not only vacuum the ticks you see, but also those you don’t see – including their eggs. Vacuum everything in the house – furniture, carpets, rugs, mattresses e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.
Spread Diatomaceous Earth
DE is the safe version of boric acid. If pets ingest it, don’t worry because it’s not toxic. Spread DE into the carpet, around baseboards, windowsills and so on, and remove it after a week.
Dry your clothes
In case you’ve been hiking in the woods or doing any other outdoor activity which can lead to caring ticks into the house, throw your clothes in the dryer first to kill any stuck tick on them. Set on a high temperature for 15 minutes, remove the clothes and wash them as usual.
Take care of your lawn to get rid of ticks outdoor
- Spray a good outdoor insecticide on grass, shrubs and crawl spaces under the house. Spray shrubs from the ground up to 2 to 3 feet (61 to 91.4 centimeters) high.
- Mow the lawn and remove weeds in any empty lot that you and your pet frequent, or where other animals and birds can come into contact with your family and pet.
